Diana Gunstone - Community Development: connecting during COVID at the neighbourhood level.
Jan. 14, 2021
Diana will share an overview of her current role as a community builder, and recent inspiring community initiatives that have taken place in Squamish this past Fall and through the Holiday Season. She will also share her presentation time with her colleague Dylan Cohen, a community engagement specialist with United Way who can speak more to the broader "Hi Neighbour" program, and future plans for Squamish. Diana Gunstone – Bio 2021… Where to begin? Born in Montreal, I grew up on the South Shore, and our family of 7 moved to Ontario during the 80’s. I studied commerce at Queens and Carleton U, graduating with honours in Marketing before social media was even thought of! A corporate career in Healthcare and Information Technology introduced me to the mountains of the West Coast, where I relocated in 89 to North Vancouver. Volunteering led me to study project management, mountain biking friends, and… my husband! Together we are grateful to live, work and play on the traditional unceded territory of the Squamish Nation, since 98. In 2004 I became a Project Management Professional and soon after grew our family through adoption in 2007 - my greatest project ever! Following my parental leave, I shifted my career focus, and embraced my new role as a full time Mom and part-time volunteer coordinator at Whistler Olympic Park. After 13 years of growing our son, volunteering with SNN, Sea to Sky Nordics, Whistler Olympic Park and on various PAC and community project teams, my project management career is now focused on non-profits. I am grateful to have the privilege to lead interesting community centred part-time projects, and currently delighted to work with United Way of the Lower Mainland as a community builder here in Squamish. |

Bryan Zandberg: National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
Feb. 25, 2021 7:00 p.m.
Bryan Zandberg was the Registrar for the National Inquiry and will be presenting about what it was like working at the public hearings of the Commission, which gathered oral and documentary evidence from over 1,500 witnesses across Canada over a period of two-and-a-half years. Reclaiming Power and Place, the title of the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, reveals that persistent and deliberate human and Indigenous rights violations and abuses are the root cause behind Canada’s staggering rates of violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people. The two-volume report calls for transformative legal and social changes to resolve the crisis that has devastated Indigenous communities across the country. |

Chuck Baumberg and Crosby MacDonald: - Wave Forest Surf Park
Mar. 11, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Chuck and Crosby will be speaking about the development of a surf park in the Cheekeye Fan area of Squamish. The surf park will be a large new attraction to the Sea to Sky corridor that will draw in a significant amount of tourists to the region as well as providing the local community an exciting new outdoor adventure sport to participate in. Our aim is to inform stakeholders in the community of our plans and listen to feedback before we go through the development permitting process. The Wave Forest was founded by myself and Crosby MacDonald. We were both born and raised in Vancouver but found careers in Finance and Consulting respectively in London, UK. After almost 10 years abroad we formed the Wave Forest company and moved home in search of land to launch the business. I now live in Squamish and Crosby is based in Vancouver (for the time being). Some examples of existing surf parks open in the world if you’re unfamiliar with the concept: https://www.bsrcablepark.com/bsr-surf-resort/ https://wavegarden.com/wavegarden-and-daewon-open-the-worlds-largest-surf-park-in-south-korea/ |

Dieter Schneider is a German Rotarian and IFMR member (International Fellowship of Motorcycling Rotarians). Following the death of his son from depression, Dieter funneled his grief into building awareness. From June 2018 to early 2020, he travelled around the world on his motorcycle sharing his story and raising awareness of depression and suicide. Dieter writes:- A year after my son took his own life after suffering from severe depression, I set off on a motorcycle to Cape Town, South Africa. The trip through East Africa was both a time to process trauma and fulfill a desire for adventure. My encounters with interesting people and my experiences on this fascinating continent healed my inner turmoil. When I arrived at the Cape of Good Hope, I made a life-changing decision. I wanted to get involved in mental health and suicide prevention. My club, the Rotary Club of Würzburg, Germany, supported me in a project that I called “Fellows Ride.” In June 2018, I started a ride around the world on a BMW 800 GS motorcycle. Even though I was driven by wanderlust and a thirst for adventure, this time I also had a mission. I wanted to shift attention off of myself and build awareness for the insidious disease of depression. See: Motorcycle ride raises awareness of depression | Rotary Voices |

The Squamish Windsports Society is a non-profit society providing sailors with access to a high wind sailing location where the Squamish River meets Howe Sound. Squamish has more high performance sailing days than most other places in North America. Sunshine and steady wind provide ideal conditions for kiteboarding and windsurfing here in beautiful British Columbia. The plan to remove land access to the Spit creates the exact scenario the Howe Sound Economic forum sought to avoid. If sections of The Spit road are removed without alternative land access (such as the proposed realignment via 3rd Ave), the pressure placed on existing locations like Oceanfront will be immense. A better solution is possible, one which was originally proposed by the SRWS which would preserve access to the Spit while supporting the habitats of salmons and other wildlife in the area. That solution isn’t possible if this project goes ahead this year in the manner currently planned by the Watershed Society and the DFO. more info: www.realignnotremove.ca website: www.squamishwindsports.com |

The SRWS formed in 1998 with a holistic approach towards watershed restoration. To date our organization has assessed over 144 watercourses in the Squamish and Lillooet River watersheds and restored thousands of metres of habitat for salmon and other wildlife. In 2005 the SRWS expanded our operations to include and education outreach program that engages over 600 students annually in outdoor experiential learning. The work the SRWS undertakes looks at the headwaters in the upper watershed all the way down to the estuary and into Howe Sound and includes scientific and state of the art methodology and monitoring programs. In the mid-1990's the SRWS worked closely with the forest industry as part of the Forest Renewal BC Watershed Restoration Program and then in the early 2000's the restoration focused more on salmon habitat and restoring estuarine function. Throughout our years of operations we have maintained strong partnerships with Squamish Nation and through this partnership have been able to restore salmon habitat in the upper Elaho River, along the Cheakamus, and throughout the traditional territory of Squamish Nation. |
