Dieter Schneider - Soultrip around the World

12:00noon: Online ZOOM meeting. email us to join.

Apr 08, 2021 12:00 PM

Dieter Schneider is a German Rotarian and IFMR member (International Fellowship of Motorcycling Rotarians). Following the death of his son from depression, Dieter funneled his grief into building awareness. From June 2018 to early 2020, he travelled around the world on his motorcycle sharing his story and raising awareness of depression and suicide.

Dieter writes:-

A year after my son took his own life after suffering from severe depression, I set off on a motorcycle to Cape Town, South Africa. The trip through East Africa was both a time to process trauma and fulfill a desire for adventure. My encounters with interesting people and my experiences on this fascinating continent healed my inner turmoil. When I arrived at the Cape of Good Hope, I made a life-changing decision.

I wanted to get involved in mental health and suicide prevention. My club, the Rotary Club of Würzburg, Germany, supported me in a project that I called “Fellows Ride.” In June 2018, I started a ride around the world on a BMW 800 GS motorcycle. Even though I was driven by wanderlust and a thirst for adventure, this time I also had a mission. I wanted to shift attention off of myself and build awareness for the insidious disease of depression.

Nikki Layton: President, Squamish Windsports Socie

12:00noon: Online ZOOM meeting. email us to join.

Apr 15, 2021 12:00 PM

The Squamish Windsports Society is a non-profit society providing sailors with access to a high wind sailing location where the Squamish River meets Howe Sound. Squamish has more high performance sailing days than most other places in North America. Sunshine and steady wind provide ideal conditions for kiteboarding and windsurfing here in beautiful British Columbia.

The plan to remove land access to the Spit creates the exact scenario the Howe Sound Economic forum sought to avoid. If sections of The Spit road are removed without alternative land access (such as the proposed realignment via 3rd Ave), the pressure placed on existing locations like Oceanfront will be immense.

A better solution is possible, one which was originally proposed by the SRWS which would preserve access to the Spit while supporting the habitats of salmons and other wildlife in the area. That solution isn’t possible if this project goes ahead this year in the manner currently planned by the Watershed Society and the DFO.

Gurpreet Singh: Indians Abroad for Pluralist India

12:00noon: Online ZOOM meeting. email us to join.

May 13, 2021 12:00 PM

Gurpreet Singh is an independent journalist and a published author, who works as a broadcaster with Spice Radio in Burnaby and writes for Georgia Straight. He is also the Director of Radical Desi, an online magazine that covers alternative politics and the cofounder of Indians Abroad for Pluralist India, a group that was established in response to growing attacks on religious minorities in India under a right wing Hindu nationalist government.

He will be speaking about the seven years of Modi government in India and what it means for the minorities and political dissidents in the world's so called largest democracy.

Modi belongs to a Hindu supremacist organization called RSS that wants to transform India into Hindu theocracy. Ever since he became the Prime Minister in May, 2014, the repression of minority communities, especially Muslims and Christians has grown.
